Do you know the Hindi of Avocado?

What is Avocado, you may ask. Avocado is a fruit which is originated from Central America. Another name of this fruit is Alligator Pear. It is so called because of its skin. The skin of an avocado is green and rough just like an alligator. The scientific name of the Avocado tree is Persea Americana.

The Avocado is called “Makkhan Fal” in Hindi. “Makkhan Fal” means the butter fruit.

Why Avocado is called “Makkhan Fal” in Hindi?

Now you know that avocado is called “Makkhan Fal” or the butter fruit in the Hindi language. It is called as so because of its high fat content. Yes, avocados are rich in fat. Almost 30% of the Avocado pulp is fat. Weight wise the fat content is 14.7% in a ripe avocado. But if we consider dry weight, then the fat percentage in it is 54.5%!

Most of the fat present in an avocado is monosaturated. Monounsaturated fat is 66-67% of all the fat in it. Saturated fat is 14-15% and triunsaturated fat is 12-13%.

Are Avocados Cultivated in India?

Avocados grow best in tropical areas. The climate of North India is not suitable for this fruit. But in different regions of South India, this fruit can be cultivated. In the Middle part of India, in Maharashtra, avocado is grown. Tamil Nadu and Karnataka are very good to grow this fruit tree.

A special breed of Avocado named Fuerte is grown successfully in hilly regions of the Himalayan state of Sikkim. Most of the parts of South India, the Guatemalan and Mexican breeds of this fruit can be grown.

The avocado production and marketing is still in the nascent stage in India. This fruit can be cultivated commercially with good profit margin.

How Healthy is an Avocado?

You know that avocado is full of fat that is why it is called the butter fruit in Hindi. You know that fat is not good for health, right?

Wrong, all fats are not bad. In fact, a certain amount of fat is needed for the well being of our body. But the fat we take from other fruits like butter, cheese or edible oils are mostly saturated which is not so healthy. The best fat to eat is the unsaturated ones.

Avocados are rich in unsaturated fats and it is the healthiest aspect of this fruit. The presence of unsaturated fats like Oleic acid helps to function the antioxidants properly. Poly and mono unsaturated fats also prevents heart attacks. This fruit can regulate the blood sugar levels and thus is beneficial for the patients with diabetics. The presence of linoleic acid in this fruit helps to keep the skin moisturized. It is also an anti-inflammatory agent. Vitamin E, and C content is avocados keep our health in best condition.

One can eat avocado raw. It is best suited for a fruit salad. Some people prefer to eat avocado with a sandwich. An avocado sandwich is a better and healthy substitute of a butter sandwich.

Avocado is very popular among the vegetarians because of its rich fat content. This fruit is the best alternative of meat and butter for them.

Avocados cannot be cooked. Heat will destroy its flesh. In most cases long time cooking of avocado may soil the utensils used due to unwanted chemical reactions.
