How to Update HTC Evo 4G with Android ICS aka Ice Cream Sandwich?

HTC EVO 4G ICS UPDATE

HTC Evo 4G was a 2010 flagship device of Sprint which was launched on its WiMAX network. Despite having a great 4.3 inches screen, 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and 512 MB RAM HTC has no desire to update this great phone to Android ICS. So, there will be no official Ice Cream Sandwich for HTC Evo 4G. But you can do this yourself; this is the fun of using the Android. Here is a step by step guide to upgrade HTC Evo 4G with Android ICS.

Why Shall You Need to ICS have Your Evo 4G?

Evo 4G is running with Android 2.3.3. With the arrival of ICS the older version is now outdated. New Android 4x or Ice Cream Sandwich is a totally different one. It is much more polished and user friendly. This is a great update. ICS is much more stable and faster than Gingerbread or any other older versions. The interface is completely changed and you shall feel that. So, Android Ice Cream Sandwich will be great to have in your HTC Evo 4G.

Be Aware of these before Proceeding

If you are a novice in rooting and such tweaking of your Android device do not do it alone. Find and seek help from a more experienced one.

This is a custom ROM based upgradation. There may be some bugs in it. These three features may not be available after update: 1)Camera Preview, 2)Gallery Editing and 3)WiMAX.

If you still want to do this go at your own risk because there is always a bit risk in rooting and upgrading. Don’t blame the author for any harm to your device or data loss.

Primary Steps to HTC Evo 4G Android 4.0 Update

Charge your phone. You need at least 70% charge.

Backup all your data to PC.

Any antivirus program or firewall app will interfere with the process and so need to be disabled.

Your phone must be rooted. If your device is not rooted then you need to root it first. Read this article to root your EVO.

Downloads

You need the following files to update your Evo 4g:

First download EVO 4G ICS ROM to your PC.

Next download Google apps package.

Now you are ready to update your device.

Final Updating Process

First connect your mobile to the PC.

Copy the two downloaded files from your PC to the root of the mobile’s external micro SD card.

Now disconnect the Evo 4G from the PC.

Then switch off the mobile.

Restart it by pressing the power button while holding the volume up button and a menu will appear soon.

Select “Recovery” option by the volume key and click the option using the power key.

In Recovery mode go to “Backup” and then to “Restore>Backup”. Create a backup of your working ROM.

Now select “Wipe data/factory reset” to delete your phone’s current software.

Now go back to the main menu screen.

Select “install zip from sd card” from the menu screen.

Now select the download Evo 4G ICS ROM file. The ROM’s filename will be like this: “PARANOIDANDROID_SAGA_v1.0.zip”. This will take some time to finish. Wait until the installation is finished.

On completion go back to the menu screen and select “install zip from sd card” again. Now choose the Gapps file. Its filename will be “apps.ics.02132012”. Install the google apps package and wait until the finishing.

After that, go back to the main menu again. Now select “reboot system now”.

Voila! Your device will be restarted with Android ICS.

It is done now. In this way you can also upgrade your HTC Evo 4G to Android 4.0.3 aka Android ICS.
